The mythology of the American highway is as deep and long as the Grand Canyon, with numerous books, music and films depicting it as a gritty and monumental stretch of sun baked tar. Compared to similar long drives in other countries, driving in the USA is one of the most interesting and exhilarating road trips of your life.
One of the most epic drives in USA is California State Route 1. Nestled in the heart of Northern California’s redwood country, this winding route along the Pacific coast just north of San Diego is an easy but fun introduction to road trips in the USA. Travel in USA is not complete without a jaunt on this road, with its legendary LA gridlocks and stunning scenery over the Point Reyes National Seashore.
Travel in the USA must be done right, with a road trip down the most famous of them all – Route 66. Rent a car from Hertz and cruise down 2451 miles from Chicago to Santa Monica, a peer at numerous discontinuous historic byways and local roads. Most notable on this road trip Route 66 is the Arizona section from the Petrified Forest to Kingman, where the 66 meets the famous Santa Fe Railroad. Travellers will be astounded at all this road trip has to offer.
Another awesome USA drive would be the US Route 20. An easy road trip for those who want to visit Yellowstone National Park, Route 20, stretching 3365 miles and the longest in the country, is perfect for you. This route will allow travellers to cross USA in their car rentals from coast to coast, spanning from Newport in Oregon to Boston. A pit stop at Yellowstone National Park is not to be forgotten, for the geothermal wonders there are sure to keep visitors open mouthed in awe.
Visitors can also rent a car and head down US Route 30. This USA drive incorporates large sections of the Lincoln Highway that runs really close to the National Automobile Museum in Nevada, Lincoln’s cabin in Illinois and the Big Mac Museum in Pennsylvania. Truly a short drive, but big views.
Visitors can travel on USA’s Route 17 out of Phoenix, to visit Monument Valley. This route will also allow visitors to drive to USA’s incredible destination, Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon. Rent a car, preferably a 4-wheel drive, to take a Jeep ride along Diamond Creek Road, that goes along the bottom of the Canyon.
Travel in the USA is incomplete without a visit to Florida Keys. The 150 mile long US 1 from Miami to Key West takes the ocean highway, hugging the coast, and links a series of keys together. A road trip down this stretch is made incredible with the spectacular section of the Seven Mile Bridge, soaring over turquoise waters and clear sand, making your USA road trip extremely memorable.
