Hertz in Avignon
The city of Avignon stands on the River Rhone in the south of France, about 50 miles from the Mediterranean. It may be well known as a historic city with its famous bridge and ancient city centre but if you rent a car in Avignon you'll also find it is a major modern transport hub. There is an international airport, major international rail links, a busy river port and two major motorways, the A9 to Spain and the A7 to Marseilles. The city itself occupies a triangle formed between the junction of the Rhone and La Durance River. Getting around Avignon is helped by inner and outer ring roads: Boulevard Limbert and Rocade Charles de Gaulle.
Avignon is, of course, famous for its historic centre enclosed within the old city walls. This is where you find the main attractions, like the impressive Palace of the Popes, the grand Cathedral, and what's left of the renowned 12th century Pont d'Avignon bridge. It was all once owned by the Pope and only became part of France 200 years ago. Today it's a World Heritage Site. If you rent a car in Avignon you'll be able to tour the central attractions and those further afield too. The Tour Philippe le Bel and Fort Saint-Andre, for example, are awkward to reach on the far side of the river without a car.
