Spain is a large mountainous country in the southwest of Europe, bordering France and Portugal. It has two coastlines: a rugged unspoilt stretch to the north and west facing the bay of Biscay and the long famous stretch of 'Costas' along the south and east coasts, mostly facing the Mediterranean. These coastal resorts attract many foreign visitors but there are many sights across the whole of the country too. Renting a car in Spain is one of the best ways to explore. The attractions vary from the cultural and history of major cities like Madrid and Barcelona to the beautifully unspoilt mountainous wilderness areas. Generally the north is greener and milder, while the countryside in the far south can be almost desert-like.
The capital of Spain is Madrid and it's easy to find: it's right in the middle. If you hire a car you'll find it's a great city to visit for its museums, culture and tapas bars. Barcelona is easily its match though. This stands on the coast to the northeast and has a more bohemian flavour than the capital. Other great Spanish attractions include the Moorish treasures of Andalucia in the south, including the fascinating cities of Granada, Seville and Cordoba. Look out for the unspoilt green north region of Asturias with the Picos de Europe Mountains and the snow-capped Pyrenees in the east.
Driving in Spain should be easy and safe. There is a network of good quality modern motorways and trunk roads, many of them requiring toll payment. The most important distinction is driving on the right and most of the road rules follow the rest of Europe. Note that away from the cities you may drive a long way between fuel stations in Spain, so make sure you fill up well before the fuel light comes on. Also note that Spanish police can be very vigilant in enforcing speed limits. On-the-spot fines can be severe. Another tip from locals is to always carry a map or sat-nav system: away from the main roads Spanish routes may not be very well signposted.
