Hertz in Barcelona
The city of Barcelona stands in the north eastern corner of Spain on the coast of the Mediterranean. It is Spain's second city in size and importance, and stands 75 miles south of the border with France. If you rent a car in Barcelona, you will be able to explore all the areas of this major European city - from the beach and harbour across the narrow coastal plain to the mountains inland. As like in any major European city, there are three bypasses and a choice of motorways - one to Madrid, one to Paris and one running along the coast.
The best views of Barcelona come from Tibidabo, a mountain to the west topped by a church and amusement park. You will be able to see how the city stands in a narrow plain between its Mediterranean beaches and the mountains. Down in the city, the highlights start with the famous Ramblas, a tree-lined pedestrian boulevard 0.75 miles long, packed with colourful and bohemian street life. On one side is the Gothic Quarter, full of the most historic buildings. Further north is the Sagrada Familia church, Antoni Gaudi's bizarre unfinished "masterpiece" and the Park Guell, his attempt to design a public park. Look out too for the Picasso Museum, it is one of the best collections of his work.
