Hertz in Lanzarote
Since the 15th century Arrecife has been inhabited. Originally a small fishing harbour, it has grown to become the capital of Lanzarote and home to around 50% of the island's population. Despite this, it retains a small and friendly feel that is also very relaxed. It gets its name from the word for "reef" in Spanish and when you see the number of small islets that dot the coastline you???ll soon see why. Renting a car in Arrecife will also open up the rest of the island of Lanzarote to you, including the spectacular Timanfaya National Park.
For a comparatively small place, Arrecife has a number of attractions including several museums. These include its own International Museum of Modern Art. Located in an 18th century castle that was once a lookout for spotting pirates, it was converted in 1994 to the attractive space it is today. The tallest building in Lanzarote is the Grand Hotel. Following a period of disuse, this has recently been completely refurbished and has a restaurant at its top, offering superb views of the city below. You should also make time to visit Charco de San Gines, the salt water lagoon lined with quaint fishermen's cottages. Rent a car in Arrecife for the chance to explore this pretty scenery.
