Bari is the capital of the Puglia region, found on on Italy's eastern Adriatic coast. It is a big point of arrival and departure via ferry for visitors, and is an important city for both culture and commerce in the area; second only after Naples in the south as a regional economic centre. Bari Vecchia, or old Bari, is a good point to begin exploring the city as it has been renovated to restore many of the older elements such as the development of the Piazza Mercantile. For culture and exhibitions the Castello Svevo, or Swabian Castle, is a well-preserved Norman castle which lies on the coast. It was built to protect the city, and today it houses many interesting exhibitions. Of note too is the Pinacoteca di Bari, Bari's provincial art gallery, which houses many works ranging from medieval times to modern contemporary art.
