You'll find the city of Groningen in the far north of The Netherlands, ten miles south of the coast and 20 miles from the German border to the east. Northern Holland's largest city stands among very flat farming countryside dotted with small lakes. Despite the rural location, if you rent a car in the historic old university city of Groningen you'll find there are good road connections to the rest of the country: the A7 motorway leads to Amsterdam 115 miles to the southwest and into Germany to the east, while the A28 leads south. There's a small international airport, six miles to the south.
The Martinitoren (St Martin's Tower) in the centre of Groningen is a fascinating medieval landmark today but was once a symbol of the city's trading influence and success. It was the tallest building in Europe when it was built in the 15th century. If you have a hire car in Groningen it's easy to visit the Tower and tour the rest of the city's attractions. The 17th-century university is one of the Netherlands' oldest and is still a major influence of the city. Around a quarter of the population are students.
