Leiden stands about halfway up the west coast of the Netherlands, five miles inland from the North Sea and midway between Amsterdam and The Hague. Two branches of the "Old Rhine" and numerous tree-lined canals run through the centre of the city and offer popular boat trips that are ideal for seeing the old town, Hortus Botanicus gardens and Leidse Hout park. If you have a rental car in Leiden you'll be able to explore the area easily, as well as visit its more famous neighbours.
Much of Leiden's historic city centre is intact, and you'll be able to wander round picturesque streets lined with 16th-century houses. Many are painted with large poems, which were part of a major arts project in the city. If you hire car in Leiden you'll also see that it is a very green city, with lots of parks and gardens. Look out for the grand old Hooglandse church, the Leiden Observatory and university buildings, and the picturesque windmills. The city's prime attraction is the Naturalis Museum, one of the biggest natural history museums in Europe with 10 million specimens.
