Hertz in Nijmegen
Nijmegen proudly calls itself "the oldest city in the Netherlands" thanks to its links with the Romans settlers 2000 years ago. It stands about halfway down the eastern side of the country, just a couple of miles from the German border and 70 miles south east of Amsterdam. If you rent a car in Nijmegen you'll be able to explore the banks of the River Waal and some of the Netherlands' most enchanting scenery. The countryside around Nijmegen is ideal for touring, with rolling hills, lakes and woods. Arnhem is only 12 miles away and makes a popular day trip and it's only 30 miles to the De Hoge Veluwe National Park, one of Holland's largest reserves.
Despite Nijmegen's long history there are not a great number of historic remains to see. The few sights that survived the Second World War include parts of the old Roman city wall, the romantic Kronenburgerpark and a section of an 18th-century Imperial Palace. If you rent a car in Nijmegen you'll be able to tour these and the attractions of the surrounding area too. Valkhof hill has the oldest buildings, including a Carolingian chapel from the 8th century, as well as excellent views of the river. Elsewhere there are some impressive modern buildings and a lively shopping centre, along with the Valkhof museum which displays artefacts going back to Roman times.
