Hertz in Oxford
Around 60 miles to the north west of London, Oxford is home to one of the oldest and most famous universities in the world. Consisting of a number of different colleges, some of their buildings date back 750 years and their honey-coloured stone is a very distinctive feature of the many different architectural styles that make up the city's centre. A little further out is Cowley, once a very important base for the British car industry and home of the original Mini. Although bicycles are a popular form of transport in this city, renting a car in Oxford will also let you get out and explore the quintessentially English countryside of the Cotswolds.
There are organised tours of many of the colleges in Oxford, especially in the summer when the students are not in residence. One of the most spectacular is Magdalen College (pronounced "maudlin") which was originally established in 1458. The city's Ashmolean Museum is a treasure trove of art and archaeology with exhibits that range from the ancient Egyptian to the modern day, while the University Museum of Natural History is also a fascinating place to visit. A short drive from the city, you will find the stunning Blenheim Palace, birth place of Sir Winston Churchill, which is set in 2,000 acres of parkland and formal gardens, so it is worth considering renting a car in Oxford.
