Southampton is the biggest city in the county of Hampshire and sits on Southampton Water where the rivers Test and Itchen meet. It has long been a very important maritime terminal and its heyday for this was in the age of the great ocean-going liners. It was also the port from which the Pilgrim Fathers departed for America in 1620.
